No Kings, Just Crew — A Speculative Protest Campaign
After seeing news coverage of the One Piece flag being used in youth-led protests across Indonesia, I was fascinated by the blurred lines between fandom and political resistance. As both a designer and anime fan, I saw an opportunity to explore how the Straw Hat Jolly Roger is being reframed as a tool for activism.
This collection of informative social media posts explains how the flag is currently being used in protests and what it represents. The designs are clean and emotionally charged, following Amnesty International’s brand guidelines as closely as possible while linking back to their coverage of the phenomenon. The imagery focuses on real protest scenes, and the content is crafted to provide context, clarity, and emotional resonance.
This piece sits at the intersection of protest, narrative illustration, and strategic design—where a pirate flag becomes a call to action, both for the youth in these images, and for Amnesty to raise funds to support them.
